I've never been on an alpha course so was interesting to see how it worked. I didn't like how the lady got really defensive of her husband when he was talking about hearing from god on a bus. She's supposed to take on the people's points of view and to them it's a completely new thing to hear someone say they'd heard god speak to them. She shouldn't have got angry when they didn't understand.
I heard the word 'agnostic' about 800 times with no definition. I looked it up and got a slightly different definition to how he was using it. Does it mean no believer or someone who thinks it's impossible to completely understand god (but believe he does exist)?
I didn't like how it felt like we were watching the people, trying to figure out which one would 'take the plunge'. Making us analyse their responses to various situations when I thought the show would have been more about the process of alpha, not being creepy voyeurs trying to guess who would crack first.
Apparently part of the alpha process is to have attractive young women serving food? Surely this isn't written in the handbook, to make sure people are attractive.
There were a few throw away comments like that which I thought were a bit misleading. But overall I didn't find it too biased one way or the other. It was a little skeptical of the methods used but wasn't unfair given anyone from outside the church would be skeptical too. It did show how alpha could enrich people's lives but its not for everyone.
The images of people doing things in the spirit were a little uncomfortable to watch. It's something I never quite understood and don't quite trust. The programme didn't fully explain what was happening. I'd like to see some scientific studies into this actually.
I hope that's enough to get a discussion going!
