The main thing I think of for religion on fictional TV is when Mark off Neighbours in the '90s went super religious to the point of mental breakdown. I remember at the time thinking it wasn't very realistic and that not all Christians are like that.
I'm sure many other tv shows have used the same plot device but I wonder if Christianity would be treated differently to other religions in this respect. I don't think a story line about someone becoming a Muslim and going off the rails would get aired unless in a hard hitting drama.
There was one drama called 'White Girl' (or something similar) about a white girl, possibly in Bradford, turning to Islam to escape a difficult home environment but that was a gritty drama, not an over the top comedy soap.
Other religions in fictional tv seem to be thrown in for the sake of diversity rather than for their religion to be the main storyline. However, Christianity is more likely to be used as a plot device. Maybe it's an easy target?
There was once a Jewish wedding in Eastenders where the lady was going to marry the man for his money because he was old and would die soon. That seemed to be playing to a stereotype (Jews having money) but that was treated seperately to the Jewishness. I don't normally watch Eastenders but remember seeing that one episode and being pleasantly surprised to see Jews presented as normal members of society rather than stereotypes, to add diversity or as a plot device.
